In the haze of parenting we all need a little clarity. Or claret. Or pinot. Or not?
As a mother of two young boys, I can certainly relate to the urge felt by many parents around the world, to reach for that glass of wine (or three) at the end of a seemingly endless day.
As many will attest, the truth about parenting is that regardless of how gorgeous your children are, it can be bloody relentless, all consuming, entirely exhausting and often thankless work. It’s much tougher than any day in the office and sometimes the only thing that gets you through the last leg before that golden hour or two on the couch, is the thought of a giant glass of wine waiting patiently to reward you for all your hard work.. once the last book has been read (again) and the final kiss goodnight has been negotiated 287 times.
So I get it. Wine is great. However, according to the new national guidelines for alcohol consumption (https://www.alcohol.gov.au/), it is now thought that in order to prevent risk of harm from alcohol-related disease or injury over a lifetime, no more than two standard drinks should be consumed on any day.
Now, two standard drinks might sound like plenty on any given Monday, however according to the same guidelines, one glass of red wine is considered to account for 1.6 standard drinks. Anyone else feeling slightly ripped off here? So the next time you’re planning your escape from your children’s bedroom to the safety of your couch, remember that a glass and a smidge might be all your body can afford! Hmm.. Might be time to take up walking again..
