Shampoo with a Purpose

This summer has been an eye opener to say the least. With unprecedented and devastating bushfires across most of our country, toxic air preventing our kids from playing outside and floods threatening land and livelihood (and sharks in suburban lakes!?) – it’s high time that we all start doing our part to take action against climate change.

One of the ways we can do this is by minimising our waste and choosing products that are aligned with the conservation message.

Almost all of my favourite beauty products come in a plastic bottle, packaged up inside more packaging. These usually end up in the recycling bin but who really knows where they go?

In Australia alone, 5.3 million consumers – that is, 27.1% of the population – purchase single use plastic bottles on a weekly basis. Statistics shows that only 36% of plastic bottles are recycled annually; resulting in approximately 373 million bottles going to waste and damaging the environment irreversibly.

As plastic can take 20-1,000 years to degrade without human intervention, its harmful polymers and toxic chemicals pose a major concern to earth’s ecosystem; contributing to oceanic acidification, environmental ‘dead zones’ where living organisms cease to strive, and greenhouse gas emissions that exceed 60,000 tonnes per year.

One company tackling the war on waste in Australia’s fastest growing retail category, using an eco-friendly and family-operated soaping mill, is Shampoo with a Purpose, who have created 4 naturally formulated, vegan, and sulphate-free solid cleansing bars as an effective and plastic-free alternative to traditional shampoos and conditioners.

“As the health of our environment continues to alarm Australians of all generations, it is important we make changes – even in the bathroom – to combat the use and waste of plastic bottles,” said Geneva Valek, Product Developer for Shampoo with a Purpose.

Multipurpose and travel-friendly, each bar in the range can also substitute as a rinse-out hair treatment when used in excess of 10+ minutes and can also be used on the body as an all-over wash.

There are four shampoo and conditioner bars for different hair types, all which are free from harsh chemicals, palm oil, plastics and animal by-products, and leave your hair feeling soft and well-conditioned.

I trialled the whole range over the break and it was hard to pick a fave! They all smell delicious and were gentle enough to use on my kids.

We all need to start thinking globally and acting consciously and with that in mind, and as each bar equates to approximately 6 retail sized bottles of standard shampoo and conditioner, the potential for impact is huge. I couldn’t recommend Shampoo with a Purpose more highly.

The full range is available online and in selected stockists around Australia, each product in the Shampoo with a Purpose range retails for $15 for a 135g bar.
